After a year of making do with a variety of tents including a straight sided work shelter that catches the wind and falls over very well, a small bell tent that is too small and a large green scout tent which provided much amusement for everyone else (we got a lovely sign pinned on ‘1st Tudor Girl Guides’) these itinerant blacksmiths decided enough was enough and to build from scratch. That means that I get to do all the designing, planning, maths and pricing as well as the shopping, and then get to make it too, oh apart from the poles, Dai will do that. Think I need to work on the division of labour here…… The basic outline for the plan was to have a tent that;
Would keep the authenticity checkers happy
The design that was settled on is based on a ridge tent but tweaked to suit our requirements. Out planning sessions highlighted that at some events we may be very squeezed for space so a small but useable tent was also necessary. In order to accommodate all of these things we decided to go for a modular tent; a main centre section that is always used and bolt on ends for use as and when.
Would be useable in a variety of times from 1AD onwards
Is light and packs up small for easy transport
Is easy to erect and take down in any weather, day or night by two people
Provides enough space for 2 somewhat messy blacksmiths who carry loads of unnecessary kit to live in comfortably for over a week (must work on this))
Is big enough to get my bed in (no bed no show as far as I am concerned) and have enough room left to actually get in the tent
Has room enough to be able to have a shower without soaking the entire contents of the tent (oh yes, we have a shower – think about it smoke, hard work, hot weather – it’s needed)
Has plenty of headroom
